Disney’s Fallen Princesses’

by Sarah on November 14, 2013

I wanted to share these photo’s with you not just because they humoured me but moved me also. We’re very much a Disney loving household but have found of late that with Disney on constant repeat there are some “messages” that the hubby and I are picking up on that are beginning to grate…like why does Mickey need the Handy Helpers to make his meals and answer the Clubhouse door? Why can’t he do it himself…the lazy so and so…

Oh yes, we clearly need to get out more. But that aside I love and loathe that Photographer Dina Goldstein’s work resonates so,  “I began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues,” says Dina. “With limited funds, I began to assemble my series The Fallen Princesses’.”

They’re really quite beautiful. There’s a book of the series available and you can view the full collection here.

What do you think? An important message or should Disney and fairy-tales not be messed with?

Love Sarah xx

Hi there, first time commenter here.

I love this campaign. I think it is damaging to tell young girls over and over (and over and over) that they are princesses and the movies and toys and stories that go along with that title insinuate the only thing they must do is find Prince Charming and the rest is easy-peasy. I read this article this morning and I think it is SUCH a breath of fresh air!

Thanks for commenting Harriet,

Well I’m a die heart Disney fan but it’s always been the Princesses with sass that I favour. In fact there was a campaign last year to ensure Brave character Merida wasn’t “sexed up” in doll form (seriously, that was going to happen)…pleased to report the petition worked! You can read more about it here

And great to know it’s not the writers or directors instigating such things! x
