Keep It Simple Stupid!

by Amry on August 20, 2013

We’re nearing the end of the summer holidays, and although I’ve enjoyed the flexibility and freedom away from the school run, I’m also quickly running out of ways to keep my three year old entertained all day. There has to be a few of you out there feeling the same!

We’ve done well making the most of the summer season, but having completed the majority of fun activities on our summer bucket list I fear my ideas, energy & resources are fast depleting. So instead of plotting elaborate plans I’m taking inspiration from a well known sales technique in the states … it’s called the K.I.S.S. method, and quite straightforwardly stands for Keep It Simple Stupid!

I don’t mean this to be rude, but rather serve as a gentle reminder that our kids can be easier pleased than we at times give them credit for. And to prove this point, to myself mostly, I brought things back to basics over the weekend with … bubbles!

Yes, bubbles – it’s not rocket science, but why do these simple pleasures always evade my mind when mapping out activities for my Amelia? I think it’s because I’m quick to get caught up in the grand gesture. Amelia is at such an active and engaged age that I often feel she constantly needs to be sophisticatedly stimulated. A jammed packed trip to Paris, museums, the aquarium, days out in London, National Trust gardens, library visits, birds of prey centre, the cinema, farm excursions, etc., etc.  … needless to say we’ve had a chock-full few months! And though giving our children these experiences is exciting and valuable, it also doesn’t hurt to remember that simple doesn’t mean unsatisfying. Amelia laughed and enjoyed herself blowing bubbles in our backyard just as much as she did at Legoland – and let me tell you, it was a hell of a lot cheaper!

So for these last few weeks of summer don’t be afraid to keep it simple. Stay home and bake cookies, pass the afternoon with play dough, or take our lead and just bust out the bubbles – either way, you may just remind yourself just how rewarding simple can be!

Love, Amry xxx
